As temperatures soar, your vehicle faces extreme stress that can lead to unexpected breakdowns or safety hazards. Before the peak summer heat arrives, performing a few essential checks can ensure your car remains reliable and safe for every journey.
Essential Summer Maintenance Checklist
- Tires : High road temperatures increase the risk of blowouts. Check your tire pressure regularly and ensure tread depth is at least 1.6 mm (though experts recommend 3 mm for better grip). Don’t forget to inspect the spare tire.
- Alignment & Balance : Properly aligned and balanced tires ensure even wear and better handling.
- Cooling System : The engine’s cooling system is your first line of defense against overheating. Verify that coolant levels are adequate and inspect hoses for any signs of leaks or brittleness.
- Battery Health: Extreme heat can accelerate battery corrosion and cause fluid evaporation. Check for any white, powdery buildup on the terminals and ensure connections are tight.
- Air Conditioning: To stay comfortable, test your AC before it’s needed. If the air isn’t blowing ice-cold, you may need a refrigerant recharge or a filter replacement.
- Fluid Levels: Heat causes fluids to work harder. Top off your engine oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid.
- Wiper Blades: Summer sun can dry out and crack the rubber on your wipers. Replace them if they leave streaks to ensure clear visibility during sudden summer showers or dust storms.
